The Luna y Mar Spa at The Resort at Pedregal Review

This review of the spa at The Resort at Pedregal highlights my experience on a beautiful day in December.

The Luna y Mar Spa, whose name in Spanish means “moon and sea,” blends the varying energies of the moon phases, with both the therapeutic effect of water and traditional Mexican healing. This unique combination and approach provide for an unparalleled experience unlike any other. You may think it sounds like some celestial folklore, but I assure you that what you experience at the Luna y Mar Spa will leave you seeing stars and never wanting to come down to Earth again!

No matter where we venture off to, whether it’s to the action-packed strip of Vegas or the floating oasis of a mega-cruise ship, my husband never fails to take the opportunity to pamper me with a spa treatment. I have experienced some pretty amazing massages, facials and hydrotherapy sessions. But just when I thought I had seen it all, Luna Y Mar Spa took the “massage experience” to a whole new level.

“The massage was pretty spectacular. I purposely was willing myself to stay awake since I didn’t want my husband to ask how the massage was afterward and for me to have to admit I fell asleep. Needless to say, that would have ended up being a very, VERY expensive nap. ” TH

The spa itself is small, with only ten private spa treatments rooms, you should be sure to plan and book your appointment before your arrival so you won’t be heartbroken if you can’t get in. (and believe me….you SHOULD be heartbroken!) Also worthy to note, you should consider a massage appointment early in the afternoon to allow you ample time to enjoy the sauna and ice room, as well as the unbelievable indoor/outdoor saltwater pool with a breathtaking view of the ocean. With my massage appointment later in the afternoon, I felt a bit rushed to make it back in time to get ready for dinner that evening and wasn’t able to take full advantage of the facilities.

Upon arrival, there was minimal waiting, and I was quickly led away into the women’s locker room. The warm, and inviting space was filled with deep reds and rich browns that instantaneously put you in an area that envelopes you in luxury. Each private dressing space included a large wooden armoire that contained a private locker, where inside you found a plush robe and sandals. Since I had done some research before arrival, I knew to change into my bathing suit at this time and not get in “massage-mode.” I was then led to a circular room that held 5-6 alcove seats with a large bowl in front of each. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and when my guide instructed me to take a seat in one of the nooks and place my feet into the bowl, I quickly obliged. She then sat down on the large stool positioned in front of me and proceeded to wash and massage my feet. I have got to tell you, that was the moment I knew I was in for a treat!!! I settled in, closed my eyes and went on that celestial journey I mentioned earlier. I was quite sad when this part came to an end.

My guide then brought me to the room where there was both a sauna, ice room, and circular in-ground spa and was told I could enjoy the facilities during my pre-massage time. Had I known this was going to be so downright relaxing in its own right, I would have come even earlier to my appointment and spent much more time in this area. Once I had hopefully disposed of about 5lbs of sweat in the sauna, I took a cold plunge in the ice room. The change from extreme heat to frigid temperatures was intense but unbelievably refreshing. I am not sure if it was the time of day or because of the time of year (December) but I saw only one other person in this area during my time there. Perhaps the small number of treatment rooms has a lot to do with it as well, but since I did not come to make friends at the spa, the peacefulness and isolation was a welcome bonus.

The next stop was the women’s’ relaxation room, where a supply of tea and an assortment of snacks were waiting, and they were divine! Had I not been planning to spend the next hour lying on my stomach I probably would have indulged a bit more…ok, a whole lot more! The snacks were light and healthy, including fresh fruit spears and dates with cheese (what kind, I am not sure). This coupled with fresh tea made for a truly pampering experience as I rested on the plush chaise lounge, secretly wishing my massage therapist was on her lunch break so I could enjoy this pre-massage experience to the fullest. You know it has to be pretty spectacular when you are in no rush to get on the massage table.

Well, the time finally came for my massage to begin and I was led away to my massage room. The room itself was standard, in that it had all of the usual contents you would come to expect, but what wasn’t standard was the view! Each room had a wall of glass doors that overlooked the indoor/outdoor tranquility pool and waterfall. Had I not been about to spend most of my time with my face in a plush headrest, I would have relished in that view….”breathtaking” is about 1/10th of how I could describe it! But since I was going to be spending the next 50 minutes (and counting) with my eyes closed, I asked my massage therapist to close the drapes so any pool visitors wouldn’t see inside. It would have been awesome if they were like the one-way mirrors you see in interrogation rooms in all of the crime-drama shows, you can see out, but the person on the other side can’t see in.

The massage was pretty spectacular. I purposely was willing myself to stay awake since I didn’t want my husband to ask how the massage was afterward and for me to have to admit I fell asleep. Needless to say, that would have ended up being a very, VERY expensive nap. But you know it’s a good massage when it allows you to escape your always-on, wheels-churning mind and your thoughts separate themselves from your body, allowing you to drift into space you rarely get to visit but need more than you know. I was transcendental!

After my massage I spent a brief moment in the salt-water meditation and tranquility pool which overlooked the ocean. I was the only one there and would have stayed for another hour had I not been fearful of missing dinner or my husband filing a missing person report. But with dinner reservations on the evening’s itinerary, my time there was limited. Again, plan for plenty of time at the spa since there are so many opportunities to take advantage of the facility outside of your scheduled treatment.

The Sum Up

Hands down, The Luna y Mar Spa was an exceptional and unrivaled spa experience. Be prepared to pay your fair share of US dollars to partake in this glimpse of luxury, but I can tell you it is worth giving up your daily Starbucks latte for a month (ok…maybe more like two months) to get to spend part of your day in a private wonderland within the paradise of The Resort at Pedregal. While the spa is best-visited solo, (to benefit from the peace and tranquility it offers) I can guarantee you, it will leave you feeling refreshed, energized and ready to take your “love on tour” when you get back to your special someone.

Without a doubt, The Luna y Mar Spa is well-deserving of the top Lover’s Score of five hearts.
